Clinton Acid Modified Starches are prepared by treating an aqueous suspension of unmodified starch with a small quantity of strong acid (e.g. hydrochloric acid). The degree of depolymerization that occurs depends on the reaction time. When in-process laboratory controls indicate the proper fluidity has been reached, a mild alkali is introduced to neutralize the acid and stop hydrolysis. Acid modified starches are manufactured in various fluidities. its product number indicates the relative fluidity of a Clinton Acid Modified starch, e.g. Clinton 290 Industrial Starch Modified possesses a higher fluidity than Clinton 220. The fluidity range over which the acid modified starches are produced makes possible the use of progressively higher starch solids concentrations for improved adhesive properties.
