Commodity Merchandising

Trainee Position
Commodity merchandisers buy and sell commodities in the cash market, as well as make and coordinate arrangements for the transportation of the product. Much of a typical day is spent on the telephone, keeping customers aware of current grain market news while buying and selling grain products. The office environment can be hectic at times as fast-changing market information is shared orally among the traders.

Our commodity merchandisers learn the fundamentals of the business by embarking on an intensive two-month training curriculum, which involves classroom and on-site learning. Training occurs at our corporate headquarters, river terminals, country elevators and processing plants. Our employees-in-training are given the opportunity to learn from experienced commodity merchandisers at many of our locations. These merchandisers all have unique stories and ideas to share, which help in molding a better understanding of the business.

ADM's merchandisers trade commodities in domestic and international markets. Merchandisers have to balance considerations of risk management, customer relations, transportation and logistics.

They also must understand how commodity markets are influenced by trade policy, supply and demand factors, weather and transportation costs. Merchandisers' ability to evaluate these changing factors drives the divisions' profitability.

Requirements
Ideal candidates are those who complete a four-year degree in agriculture, business or a business-related field, with a GPA of 2.8 or greater. Candidates must be open to relocation throughout the U.S.

Internship
Our commodity merchandiser interns learn the fundamentals of the business by embarking on an intensive 12-week internship program at one of ADM’s commodity merchandising locations. Interns work closely with ADM merchandisers to buy, sell and transport agricultural products in a fast-paced, exciting office environment. This exciting opportunity will expose students to many aspects of commodity merchandising and is designed to offer a meaningful professional-level experience.

Requirements
Ideal candidate will have a minimum of 2.8 GPA with a degree focus in agriculture or business related fields, and with demonstrated leadership qualities and a conscientious work ethic.
