Elevator Management Trainee

ADM owns and/or operates a network of grain elevators stretching across the United States, South America and Canada, with a concentration in the Midwest. This network is the foundation for linking the origination of grain from producers to ADM processing and other end user markets. The facilities vary in size and scale to include truck, unit train, river and export facilities.

The grain elevator manager manages the profitability of a grain facility through grain merchandising, accounting, operations, customer service and staff supervision. The career focuses upon the ability to enhance value through the safe handling and merchandising of grain and providing outstanding customer services.

The training program begins on-the-job at your assigned location, and includes hands-on, Web-based and classroom training. Trainees are exposed to other ADM facilities, including soy processing, river elevator and wheat milling. The training is designed to teach you each aspect of the grain elevator management business and how various markets influence the business. The first location placement is through a harvest season, and generally not more than 12 months.

The second phase is as an assistant manager, where there is a continued learning of the business and the opportunity to apply new skills.  The opportunity to be considered for management positions follows, as they become available.

Key components of the training include grain merchandising; space and logistics management; facility operations such as receiving, load-out of grain, maintenance and safety; staff supervision, including hiring, managing and evaluation of employees; financial accounting and management; and customer service including creating value for the customer in a commodity business.

Success depends upon the ability to perform in a fast-paced, multi-task oriented environment.  Opportunities are abundant, and a trainee’s career can grow with ADM in various ways – through more responsibilities, working in different geographic locations and joining other business units.

Candidates must be completing a four- year degree in business or agricultural business-related field. A minimum GPA of 2.8 is preferred, and the candidate must be open to relocation throughout the U.S.

Internship

Our elevator management interns learn the fundamentals of the business by embarking on an intense 12-week internship program at one of ADM’s country elevator locations. This exciting opportunity will expose students to many aspects of elevator management and will result in a truly meaningful experience.

Interns learn how to manage the profitability of a grain facility through grain merchandising, accounting, operations, customer service and staff supervision.  The experience also focuses upon the intern’s ability to enhance value through the safe handling and merchandising of grain and providing outstanding customer services.

Students must have completed approximately 90 semester hours, or within two semesters of graduation.  A minimum 2.8 GPA with a degree focus in an agriculture or business-related field is required.
