Increasing recycled waste, ADM Columbus corn plant, 2012

Pilot program’s success provides template for additional recycling efforts

At our Columbus, Nebraska, corn processing and cogeneration complex, ADM has piloted a waste-management program that resulted in a substantial improvement in the percentage of waste being recycled, and an accompanying decrease in waste sent to landfills.

By taking steps such as identifying alternative uses for organic materials and implementing stricter waste-monitoring and inspection protocols, the plant was able to increase the percentage of waste recycled at the complex to 73 percent by December 2012, up from just 1 percent at the beginning of the year.

The success of this pilot initiative has led ADM to begin expanding the program to the Corn division’s eight other facilities, as well as to several plants in the company’s Oilseeds business unit.
