Corn facilities lead in reducing water use
per unit of production

About 34 of ADM’s more than 700 facilities use 95 percent of the total water we consume as a company globally.  And our six U.S. corn processing facilities are responsible for about 70 percent of our overall global usage.

In 2008, following completion of a companywide water-use survey, we established a baseline and launched an intensive water-conservation effort. As a result, by Dec. 31, 2012, we had reduced our corn processing facilities’ water consumption by 11.8 percent on a per-unit-of-production basis. Other ADM business units engaged in less water-intensive operations are implementing similar conservation programs. Our companywide goal is to achieve a 15 percent reduction by 2018.

With the rollout of our EMIS water tracking and the implementation of a new global water reporting procedure, our data collection and reporting capabilities continue to improve. In future publications, we expect to be able to report usage from the top 95 percent of ADM’s global water users.
