Projects driving progress
As of Dec. 31, 2012, ADM’s global footprint comprised more than 265 processing plants, more than 420 crop-origination facilities and a vast global transportation network consisting of about 2,400 barges, 26,900 railcars, 1,800 trucks and trailers, and 38 oceangoing vessels.
Since 2011, we have identified energy-saving projects in areas ranging from pump and fan operations to exhaust heat recovery, control-room optimization and improved data-management. Many of these projects have been completed; others are scheduled for implementation in coming years.
The projects completed as of Dec. 31, 2012, enabled us to achieve an estimated 4.3 percent improvement in energy-intensity, the ratio of energy consumption to production volumes in our plants, since 2010. This progress puts us well on the way to reaching our goal of a 15 percent reduction in energy per unit of production by 2020.
