Energy resource-management:
Toward standardization of metrics and practices

An ADM ethanol plant in Peoria, Illinois — one of the largest of its kind in the world — reduced its energy use by 9 percent in one year. A second plant in Clinton, Iowa, has cut its usage by more than 30 percent since 2002. And in the first year of a coordinated conservation effort, the Company’s North American flour milling division reduced its total electricity use by 12 million kilowatt hours from the plants’ average for the years 2003 to 2008. The division is working to increase that savings to 50 million kilowatt hours per year by 2013.

For years, individual divisions and departments throughout our global enterprise have been working to conserve energy in order to make efficient use of natural resources while reducing costs. In 2008, ADM convened a cross-functional, cross-divisional Energy Resource Management Working Group, which is focused on standardizing the way we measure and report energy metrics companywide. The group is also working to help the company reduce its usage through facility assessments and through the development of energy plans specific to company divisions.
