U.S. Facilities

ADM’s domestic operations comprise 133 processing plants and 195 procurement facilities – including grain elevators, ports and shipping terminals used to store both raw materials and finished products – spread across 40 states. Our U.S. processing facilities include:

More than 50 oilseed plants, including 23 crushing facilities, where meal from crops such as soybeans, canola, cottonseeds and sunflower seeds is separated from crude vegetable oil. This oil can be partially refined at ADM’s 13 domestic oilseed refineries for use in the manufacture of inks, paints, solvents, lubricants and other industrial materials. Or, it can be further processed into edible products such as salad oils, margarines and liquid shortenings. We also use refined soy and canola oils that undergo additional processing to manufacture biodiesel fuel at plants we own or own jointly in Missouri and North Dakota.

Oilseed meal, meanwhile, is used to produce animal feed as well as various isolates, concentrates and flours that add protein to a variety of foods. Some meals also have industrial applications; cottonseed flour, for example, is used to make pharmaceuticals, while companies that make chemicals, paper and filters often incorporate cotton cellulose pulp.  ADM’s oilseed plants are located in Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.

Thirteen corn processing plants, including both dry mills – where corn is ground, crushed and rolled for use in products such as animal feeds and ethanol fuel – and highly sophisticated wet mills, which steep the grain in a water mixture before separating it into four parts. We use two of the parts – fiber and gluten – primarily in animal feeds. The other two parts are the germ, which we process into oil, and starch, which we use to create sweeteners, thickeners, dietary fiber supplements, and other products. In all, ADM generates 24 different products from corn kernels.  Our existing corn processing facilities are located in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Carolina and North Dakota. We also have two new corn dry mill plants under construction – primarily for ethanol production – in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Columbus, Nebraska.

Twenty-three wheat mills that produce dozens of different flours, as well as six plants that manufacture complete bakery mixes for commercial customers, two milo mills, a starch/gluten plant and a bulgur mill. These various operations are located in California, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas and Washington.

Four cocoa processing plants that produce chocolates, cocoa powders, cocoa butter and cocoa liquor for chocolate manufacturers and food processors in the confectionery, bakery, dairy and beverage industries.  In 2008, we opened a new cocoa processing plant in Hazleton, Pennsylvania. The other plants are located in Massachusetts, New Jersey and Wisconsin.
