Sustainability

Mindful that the vast size, scope and reach of our enterprise impacts communities, organizations and individuals nationwide, ADM’s 16,000 U.S. employees work diligently to ensure that our impact remains overwhelmingly positive. Our commitment to sustainability involves a companywide effort to ensure that our operations are environmentally sound; economically beneficial to our colleagues, operating communities and business partners; and consistent with the highest standards of ethics and integrity. We fulfill this commitment by working to more effectively manage water resources and reduce emissions at our processing plants; by sourcing crops from growers and cooperatives that adhere to environmentally and socially responsible agricultural and labor practices; by making targeted civic and charitable contributions to worthy causes that make our communities more vibrant places to live and work; and by maintaining strict standards of ethics and accountability and promoting diversity and inclusion in every aspect of our operations.

In the U.S., ADM has taken a lead in carbon capture and sequestration, an innovative technology for reducing emissions. In 2008, we announced a project with the Midwest Geological Sequestration Consortium and other partners to confirm, over the course of several years, the ability of the Mount Simon rock formation to accept and store large volumes of carbon dioxide captured from our Decatur, Illinois, ethanol production facility. In 2010, ADM was awarded by the U.S. Department of Energy a full-scale commercial project designed to sequester and store 1 million tons of carbon dioxide annually to demonstrate capture and sequestration from commercially generated carbon dioxide. These projects will help promote understanding of the use of carbon capture and sequestration technology for reducing emissions and help commercialize this technology for other industries.
