ADM is also developing crop-based alternatives to other products made from petroleum, such as plastics and chemicals. Our line of Evolution Chemicals™ includes polymers, solvents, starches, and other chemicals that are used in consumer and industrial applications like paints, plastics, household cleaners and pharmaceuticals. In Decatur, Illinois, we are constructing a facility to produce propylene glycol from biobased, renewable resources. Propylene glycol is a chemical used in industrial products such as paints, coatings and resins, as well as in foods and pharmaceuticals.
Through a joint-venture with Metabolix Inc., we are producing a line of renewable plastics under the Mirel™ brand name that can biodegrade in natural environments. We are also collaborating with PolyOne Corporation to develop bio-based plasticizers – naturally derived chemicals used to make plastics softer and more flexible.
