Though processing is the heart of our operations, the uniqueness of ADM’s business model lies in fact that we’re able to add value at nearly every stage of the agricultural processing value chain. We first source crops from major growing regions, then deliver them to various processing operations via one of the world’s largest agricultural transportation and storage networks, which is composed of approximately 1,600 trailers, 1,700 barges and 24,700 railcars. Along the way, crops are often housed temporarily in ADM storage facilities. In the United States, ADM operates 142 domestic elevators with an approximate aggregate storage capacity of 400 million bushels. These facilities are located in most of the nation’s major grain producing states: Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. Finally, we again draw upon our transportation assets to deliver finished products to customers, whom we also assist with sales, marketing and new-product development.
