ADM to Feature Ingredients for Functional Beverages at 2009 Supplyside West

11/09/2009
Sales of Fortified and Functional Beverages Expected to Top $28 billion by 2012

Sales of fortified and functional beverages in the United States topped $23.3 billion in 2008, and are expected to grow to more than $28 billion by 2012.  Archer Daniels Midland Company (NYSE: ADM) will highlight the Company’s portfolio of ingredients that can be used in beverages during the 2009 SupplySide West International Trade Show and Conference, Nov. 11 to 13 at the Venetian & Sands Expo in Las Vegas.

“Consumers continue to seek beverages that are not only great tasting, but offer functional benefits as well,” said Courtney Kingery, marketing and customer development manager. “ADM offers beverage formulators a complete line of ingredients that can deliver these benefits along with the technical expertise to help them match the right ingredient to their application.”

In booth #24027, ADM will sample a Piña Colada Meal Replacement Beverage and a Healthy Tea Beverage. The Piña Colada Meal Replacement beverage contains ADM’s CardioAid™ plant sterols, Fibersol®-2 dietary soluble fiber, Pro-Fam® isolated soy protein and Novasoy® soy isoflavones. It is a good source of protein and fiber and contains 25 mg of isoflavones and 650 mg of plant sterols.

The Healthy Tea Beverage features Fibersol-2 dietary soluble fiber, Novasoy® soy isoflavones, Novatol™ vitamin E. It is calorie reduced compared to sugared or sweetened tea and contains 25 mg of isoflavones and 5 g of Fibersol-2.

“Beverages like the ones we’re featuring this year are an excellent way to deliver the benefits consumers want – whether it’s increasing fiber intake or adding plant sterols – without compromising taste,” said Greg Dodson, business manager, ADM Natural Health and Nutrition.

In addition, ADM will sponsor a Vendorworks program on “Isoflavone Efficacy and Safety.” Dr. Mark Messina, Ph.D., M.S., will discuss soy isoflavones as a natural way to reduce menopausal symptoms like hot flashes and will explore recent clinical data on many of the potential benefits of isoflavones in relation to women’s health. The program will be held Thursday, Nov. 12, from 10 to 10:50 a.m.
