Honoring Our ARTCO Colleagues on National Maritime Day
On National Maritime Day, ADM proudly recognizes the dedication and impact of colleagues at ARTCO—our U.S. river transportation business—who play a vital role in supporting our farmers, the agriculture sector, and global food security. Across the inland waterways, their dedication keeps ADM's supply chain moving and upholds a proud maritime legacy.
"We Help Farmers Keep Their Livelihoods"

Shawn Williams, pilot of the M/V Crimson Glory, underscores the essential link between maritime transport and American agriculture:
"Our work is essential to the U.S. farmer’s needs. Our industry is the most efficient in transportation for safely getting goods all over the U.S. for global transport. The maritime industry helps the farmers all over the U.S. keep their livelihoods while strengthening the economy."
For Shawn, this day is about recognizing more than just the movement of goods:
"National Maritime Day is not about just the crews and vessels... it’s about the impact that the industry has on the country’s growth and economy."
"Real Purpose in What We Do"

First mate D. Miguel Spinola finds meaning in knowing his daily work is part of a global food system:
"To know I play a small role in moving our farmers’ products all over the world is fulfilling. To know that ADM plays a big part in supporting our economy and providing strong food security through our maritime transportation gives real purpose to what we do as individuals and as a team."
He adds a note of reverence for the past, and inspiration for the present:
"On National Maritime Day... people must know and remember the story of the Merchant Marines of World War II—everyday citizens who stepped up in extraordinary ways."
"From Farm to Table—We Make a Difference"

Sarah Johnson, a deckhand with 1.5 years at ARTCO, found new purpose in her maritime career:
"I never thought about how crucial my job was to the farmers and the food industry. What we do every single day truly makes a difference—not only from the food industry standpoint or the farmers—but the lives of many people across the world that we help supply key ingredients to."
Sarah also leads by example, inspiring the next generation:
"Being able to show my daughters that I can succeed in my career has opened their minds to potentially following in mom’s footsteps to become the next pilot of the mighty Mississippi River!"
"We're Part of a Complex System That Makes It All Possible"
Miles Merriman, lineboats manager, emphasizes how everyday tasks at ARTCO contribute to global food movement:
"I am just one of many that play a part in transporting U.S. farmers’ food that ends up all over the world in many different products. Each day you are focused on your part... but it is important to take a step back and look at what your part played in the large, complex system of global trade and processing that makes it all possible."
He also reminds us of the personal sacrifice and professionalism it takes:
"The next time you see a towboat or ship passing by, take a moment to reflect: there are men and women onboard who have left their families behind—to ensure the vessel runs safely, the cargo arrives securely, the crew is cared for, and our rivers and environment are protected."
A Message from Leadership
Chris Boerm, ADM's president, Transportation, highlights the foundational role of these colleagues in ADM’s mission:
"Our ARTCO mariners are a backbone of ADM’s U.S. supply chain – and our nation’s entire agricultural economy. Their skill, grit and commitment ensure that the crops our farmers grow can move efficiently to market—supporting food security and feeding the world. We’re proud to celebrate their contributions not only today, but every day."
From deckhands to pilots, first mates to managers, ADM is proud to celebrate our ARTCO colleagues and all maritime professionals who help farmers feed the world and keep our waterways—and our future—moving forward.
