From Fizzy to Fulfilled: Today's Non-Alcoholic Beverages Need to Do More Than Refresh

Refreshment and great taste still define the global beverage category. But today's consumers expect more from every sip. They're choosing beverages that fit their lifestyles, support how they want to feel and match the moments that matter most.

ADM identified eight occasion-based beverage consumer segments across nine global markets – Germany, the UK, USA, South Africa, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Australia and Vietnam – and uncovered what's shaping non-alcoholic beverage choices. The findings reveal three shifts creating new opportunities for innovation.

ADM Beverage Lifestyle Report

Trend 1: Function with Feeling
Functional beverages remain a global growth opportunity, but consumers are no longer buying benefits alone. They increasingly choose drinks based on how those benefits make them feel, and that emotional connection is reshaping value.

Trend 2: Beyond Sweet
Sweetness remains essential, but it's no longer enough to stand out. Consumers seek beverages with greater depth and complexity, creating room for layered sensory experiences that balance sweet with spicy, sour, savory through controlled bitterness and botanical notes.

Trend 3: Occasion Polarization
Consumers make different decisions depending on whether they're relaxing alone, commuting, entertaining at home or socializing out. Understanding these moments gives brands a clearer roadmap for relevant and more personal beverage innovation.

Brands that can bring these elements together will be well-positioned to lead the next wave of beverage innovation. Learn more in ADM's Beverage Lifestyle Report here.
