Vanilla: trustworthy ‘direct-from-farmer’ sourcing - Direct access to citrus raw material from numerous origins for unlimited flavor profiles

HEIDELBERG-EPPELHEIM, December 3, 2019 – Vanilla and citrus are among the most popular flavors in the beverage and food industry. Latest acquisitions position Archer Daniels Midland Company (NYSE: ADM) as a global industry leader for these flavors, with a wide variety of both single ingredients and complete customized solutions worldwide.

Rodelle acquisition led to sustainable direct vanilla sourcing

Following the acquisition of Rodelle last year and its joint-venture with Sahanala, ADM now works with a cooperative of over 3,700 vanilla farmers in Madagascar. Sahanala is the industry’s first farmer-owned processor and exporter of vanilla beans, rooting ADM’s supply chain at the origin source. “Our unique vertically integrated supply chain coupled with our local flavor creation competencies and application know-how lead to a wide range of vanilla products and solutions that meet consumers’ preferences,” says Eva-Maria Lechner, director, Product Management Ingredients, ADM.

Looking at the increasing demand for sustainably sourced products, manufacturers can benefit from a traceabilty system: Sahanala captures information from each farmer and shares details from the association to strengthen their confidence in the vanilla market. “We are convinced that more certainty for the farmers will result in a more stable industry which helps our customers reliably manage their vanilla supply chain,” says Lechner.

In addition, ADM maintains further contracts with partners in India, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Uganda and others to ensure the availability of the diverse vanilla supply.

Based on this extensive access to a wide variety of vanilla raw materials ADM’s portfolio offers pure vanilla extracts, cured vanilla beans as well as natural vanilla flavors. “With our global Customer Creation & Innovation Centers, we enable our customers to work locally with our teams developing delicious tailor-made ice cream products and baked goods characterized by highly diversified vanilla nuances,” says Lechner.

Expertise throughout the whole citrus value chain

Amazingly fresh and fruity: citrus flavors guarantee excellent taste and are an essential ingredient in many food and beverage categories, particularly in non-alcoholic beverages. The annual growth rate of 5 percent until 2025 shows the continuing high potential.

“This year’s acquisition of Florida Chemical Company (FCC) and Erich Ziegler Company are key for ADM. They create a unique platform with a complete citrus portfolio that meets customers’ needs in every region,” says Lechner. It includes a full range of from the named fruit (FTNF) extracts, folded oils, add-back flavors, fractions and isolates.

Both Ziegler in Europe and FCC in North America have pioneered the use of state-of-the-art technology in citrus processing and can rely on long-term supplier relationships. With the merger of the three companies, ADM has virtually unlimited access to a variety of citrus raw materials from numerous origins. “In line with our decades of application expertise for beverages, our developers are able to express every natural true-to-fruit citrus profile customers can imagine,” says Lechner. Furthermore, ADM offers full product development -from the flavor to the finished beverage compound - as well as application support - from first ideas to developing concepts for all regions.
