ADM Names Marschall I. Smith General Counsel

DECATUR, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Archer Daniels Midland Company (NYSE: ADM) announced today that the board of directors has appointed Marschall I. Smith senior vice president, general counsel and secretary, effective July 30, 2012. He replaces David Smith who previously announced his intention to retire, after 31 years with the company.

Marschall Smith joins ADM from 3M Company, where he was senior vice president, legal affairs, and general counsel. He will report to Chairman, CEO and President, Patricia A. Woertz.

In 2007, Marschall Smith joined 3M Company as senior vice president, legal affairs, and general counsel, where he led the legal affairs team and was responsible for government affairs, ethics and environmental matters. Prior joining 3M, Smith served as general counsel at Brunswick Corporation; Digitas, Inc.; and IMC Global, Inc. He served in the law departments of Baxter Healthcare and ICI Americas, and began his career in private practice. Smith earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Princeton University, a Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia, and an MBA from the University of Chicago; and he served in the United States Marine Corps.
